Birth Story

I decided that I would write and share our birth story for those who have asked and don't know. Things had gone extremely smooth up until Thursday August 21st. Early that morning I started having pretty strong painful contractions. We were in Logan visiting Aspen and Edith (my mother in law) ended up taking me in to labor and delivery early that morning. They gave me a shot of terbutaline to stop the contractions and did some blood work and an FFN test. The FFN came back negative meaning there was a less than 5% chance I would deliver in the next two weeks, the blood work looked good, but my blood pressure was really high for awhile. The Dr. Decided to have me do a 24 hour urine test to check proteins in my urine for preeclampsia with the high blood pressure. Long story short I went home and my 24 hour urine as of Friday the 22nd looked good. I had
To see my Dr. In Burley that Friday as well and they said my blood pressure was a little elevated but that meant i would probably just start seeing the Dr. Weekly now to monitor that. So my next appointment was Thursday August 28th with him and I went in expecting to be out like a normal visit. My blood pressure  was in the high 140's which isn't terrible but elevated enough he wanted me to have a Non Stress test at labor and delivery and do blood work to check liver and kidney functions. I went and had that done and things were looking good but he told me we would start being monitored at labor and delivery 2 times a week and seeing him once a week to make sure we stayed on top of the blood pressure and knew exactly when things were getting worse. Of course as with everything in pregnancy, it could get severe and be very bad in the matter of a few hours or we could stay mild and keep going the way I was for the next 11 weeks and deliver at 38 weeks. We just didn't know, hence watching my very closely. He had me get my first steroid shot that Thursday to start developing babies lungs a little quicker and I went in Friday morning the 23rd for my second shot. I thought I was going in, getting a shot, and just due to be in labor and delivery Monday the 1st for my non stress test, labs, and blood pressure monitoring. My blood pressure ended up being in the high 150's over 105 though and the Dr. Wouldn't let me leave without doing another stress test, labs, and 24 hour urine test. We passed the stress test and the labs looked good, but the protein in my urine had risen 8 times since my last one the week before. So again, I went home with the disease somewhat progressing but still mild enough to not be emergent and knowing I would be back doing it all Monday morning again. Saturday and Sunday I just felt blah and thought probably just not feeling good and being 28 weeks pregnant with Twins. I woke up Sunday morning with stomach pain that radiated around to my back and up through my shoulders. It went away after a few hours so we drove out to Heglar where Tyson's parents were camping for the weekend and just spent Sunday out there not doing anything, just hanging out. Around 7:00 that evening the stomach and back pain came back and I told Tyson we probably better just go home because I wasn't feeling well. We decided to head home about 8:30 and on the drive the pain got so severe I told Tyson I didn't think I could wait to get it checked out at our appointment with labor and delivery the next morning. We dropped maddie off and headed in to the hospital. My blood pressure was in the 190's over 120's this night. They did blood work and a urine test and determined my liver and kidneys were not functioning as they should and would start shutting down if we didn't do something about the blood pressure quick. The preeclampsia had become very severe very quick. They started giving me pain medication(I was in the worst pain I have ever felt in my life) and they started Magnesium so I wouldn't start having seizures with as high as my blood pressure was. Dr. Cannon came in and told me that this was bad enough now I would be in the hospital for the remainder of my pregnancy and that it needed to be somewhere with the capability of taking care of very premature babies because he was certain we wouldn't make it term but didn't know how long they could hold it off and keep them in there. They decided to fly me to Boise around 2 am the morning of September 1st in hopes we could get things somewhat under control and not have to deliver so early. We decided to have Tyson go grab some things from home and drive a vehicle up so we had some of our stuff and our car here. When I got to Boise the first thing they did was blood work again and it came back saying my liver was shutting down, the numbers had jumped 5 times just from what they were in burley a few hours earlier and my kidneys weren't doing their job either. At that time they told me they would have to take the babies emergency c-section so this disease wouldn't take over me. They explained all the risks to us of taking these babies so early and actually after looking over all our ultrasounds determined they were going by the date of one of the first ultrasounds telling us they were only 27 weeks 2 days which made them 12-13 weeks early. We knew this was our only option though and got prepared for the c section. They took me in and Tyson got in scrubs and was able to watch the whole procedure as well as hold my hand through it. He has been my rock through this whole thing. There were teams for each baby in the surgery room and a total of 14 people with all the doctors and nurses working on me and each baby. Tyson was then able to go with the doctors and babies and get them settled in to the NICU while they finished my surgery and got me to recovery. It is very hard to not just get your baby and hold them as soon as they're born.  I am dying to hold them and snuggle them but I know what's best for them is being done and I feel fortunate  we can look at them and at least touch them. Jace Wardell was born at 6:36 AM weighing 1 lb 12 oz and was 11 &3/4 inches long and Blair Jaxon was born 2 minutes later at 6:38 AM weighing 2 lbs 2.6 oz and 13 & 3/4 inches long. They are doing as well as expected for being so small and premature. The doctors keep telling us they are feisty little boys, which is great because they will be
Fighters. They have a long road ahead in the NICU looking at 2 and 1/2 to 3 months staying here and will hopefully overcome every obstacle that may come their way through this. We feel so blessed to be their mommy and daddy and Maddie is head over heels in love with them already and loves visiting them. We are so very thankful for all the love, thoughts, and prayers for our family. We are very blessed to have such great friends and family. I will keep this blog updated on the babes as we go as well, not only for myself but so friends and family can read up on any updates on them if they'd like.
